The study, conducted in the United States, focused on finer particles (known as PM2.5) which have been attributed to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The data, published in the October issue of the journal Diabetes Care, showed an increase of over 20% in the prevalence of diabetes in urban areas where the presence of PM2.5 is greater. The connection between this form of pollution and diabetes remained even after removing the influence of other risk factors such as obesity and ethnicity.
