Placebo deception and without irritable bowel syndrome

published in PLoS December
The placebo works even without deceit.
study in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

The placebo in clinical trials is typically used as a control to test potential new drugs. In these studies, patients are divided into two groups (drug vs placebo) and the data analyzed to see whether the pharmacological effect is greater than that of placebo. Often the data point to a therapeutic response in those who take pills that do not contain active ingredients. The placebo data are so convincing that many doctors (one study estimates 50% in the U.S.) secretly administered placebo in patients unaware.
As this deception is ethically questionable, Ted Kaptchuk and colleagues, evaluated the power of placebo in an honest and respectful. The researchers, belonging all'Osher Research Center Researchers at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, studied 80 patients with irritable bowel syndrome , dividing them into two groups. A group that served as a control did not receive any medication, the other has knowingly received placebo. Kaptchuk illustrating how the study says, "Not only did we make it quite clear that the tablets were sugar pills without the active ingredient, but we also say 'placebo' labels' . Patients were followed for 3 weeks. At the end of the observation period almost twice as many patients treated with placebo showed a significant improvement in symptoms than the control group (59% vs 35%) . In addition, other clinical parameters, improvement rates were comparable to those obtained with the most powerful drugs against irritable bowel syndrome.
the authors caution that this study simply opens the door to the notion that the placebo is also effective in the patient fully informed. Although larger studies are needed, these results suggest that treatment with placebo even when administered without hiding with a plausible rationale of potential effects, may produce a beneficial response .

Mortality and morbidity

Increased life expectancy is accompanied by several years spent in health

was revealed by new research published in the December issue of the Journal of Gerontology

Questa nuova ricerca condotta da Eileen Crimmins, Gerontologa presso la University of Southern California , dimostra che il periodo medio di vita trascorso with serious or debilitating diseases has increased over the last ten years.
According to the researcher the possibility of life in health of a twenty year old today has been reduced by one year compared to a peer than a decade ago, even though life expectancy has increased.
"We always assumed that each new generation was more healthy and long-lived than the previous one," said Crimmins , "However, the compression of morbidity may be as illusory as immortality."
A male of 20 years in 1998 could expect to live another 45 years without at least one of the leading causes of death: cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. The number of years has fallen to 43.8 years in 2006, with the loss of more than a year. For young women the life expectancy of young people without serious illnesses has fallen from 49.2 years to 48 years in the last ten years.
"There is substantial evidence that we have done little to eliminate or delay the onset of disease, while we have reduced death from disease," said Crimmins "at the same time there was a significant increase in the incidence of certain chronic diseases, especially diabetes. " From 1998 to 2006 also increased the prevalence of cardiovascular disease among men, cancer in both sexes and of diabetes from 30 years onwards. In addition increased the percentage of people with more than one disease.
"The growing problems associated with obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol are the evidence that human health does not improve over the generations" reiterates Crimmins, "there seems to be moving toward a world where we arrive at the end of life without experiencing a significant period of illness, loss of function or disability. "

Imagine eating a substitute for the real experience?

The action (pictured) to eat a certain food would cause a phenomenon of habituation in fact comparable to satisfaction implemented by the brain to avoid eating too many servings of something that we like.
Morewedge Carey, lead author of the study, in commenting on the results shows that this finding could be useful to prepare methods to help people make healthy lifestyle choices by, for example, the consumption of unhealthy foods, drugs and cigarettes.

My Stomach Hard Bloated

There is evidence of the beneficial effects of physical activity in primary prevention and management of cancer and there is an association between high levels of physical activity and reducing rates of death from cancer.
Walking or cycling for at least half an 'hour per day is associated with a reduction of cancer and increasing the activity hour cancer incidence dropped by 16 percent.
In particular, there is a strong correlation between increased physical activity and reduction of colon cancer and prostate cancer. Other studies show that starting a physical activity after cancer diagnosis may help recovery and improve care outcomes.
Men who are physically active are less likely to have erection problems .
Exercise may reduce the risk of dementia in the elderly .
not smoke, healthy diet and body mass index of less than 25 are the other important factors to stay healthy.

Cardiovascular benefits of physical activity and lifestyle

were submitted November 15, 2010 at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions of the results of two studies conducted by Northwestern University ricercatoti, indicating that lifestyle has a greater impact on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease than to be genetically predisposed to acquire these diseases .

In the first study it was found that people who maintain a healthy lifestyle, calculated on five factors:

 1. low body mass index
 2. limited alcohol consumption
 3. proper amounts of potassium, calcium, fiber and low saturated fat intake
 4. participation in regular exercise
 5. smoking cessation

have 60% chance of having a low risk profile cardiovascular disease after 20 years. This percentage falls to 37% for those who retain 4 factors, 30% for 3 factors, 17% for 2 and 6% for one or none.

In the second study, the researchers found that in most individuals the development of cardiovascular disease is caused by factors related to lifestyle and only a small part is due to heredity.

What are you doing and how you live has a greater impact then of their genes, it should empower people to follow a healthy lifestyle such as the 5 factors listed above.

Quality of sleep and inflammation

U.S. researchers have found that is a poor quality that insufficient sleep duration linked to higher levels of inflammation, a known risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
The research presented at the conference of the American Heart Association in Chicago is particularly significant because evaluate these parameters from an epidemiological point of view and not in laboratory experiments with sleep deprivation.
Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which is an index that distinguishes a poor-quality sleep a good sleep by measuring seven different areas: quality subjective sleep, difficulty falling, daily habits, sleep duration, sleep disturbance, use of drugs and sleep disturbances during the day.
In study participants with poor sleep quality were detected higher levels of fibrinogen, IL-6 and C-reactive protein.

BENEFITS OF LEARNING A LANGUAGE TO YOUNG

VI I copy the frequently asked questions up because you have to teach a second language to young children.
addition to the benefits of a more competitiveness in the adult here are other answers to questions that parents ask frequently on Bilingualism or multilinga.

Learning a foreign language is an enriching experience to children: children can get the most from this wonderful adventure. Seven key points.

1. Why is it so important to acquire languages by youngsters?

to exploit the full potential of the child. The acquisition of foreign languages has a very positive effect. Exposure to new phonetic patterns boosts capacity audience aware of the child and helps to make more careful than in his own language. This predisposes to pay attention to that, later, will be required by the school.

2. There are social benefits?

The early learning of languages opens the mind of children and, in addition to this, it eliminates the fear of studying languages and discouragement in the face of their perceived difficulty. Children develop the ability to adapt to unusual things in relation to their culture of origin. Even if your child continues to study the same foreign language at school once, the effort spent learning the original languages in preschool area are never useless.

3. The early learning of foreign languages improves cognitive abilities?

A new language is a challenge, a new language captures the interest and is looking to overcome the difficulties of materials. Some research indicates that early language learning may even improve nonverbal cognitive abilities, such as those required by mathematics.

4. What language should I learn?

The prevailing trend is spreading the teaching of English that is found in the education system across Europe. Moreover, the promotion of teaching and learning of languages other than English, such as those in neighboring countries in border regions, it can promote multilingualism. We are recommending that parents take advantage of greater freedom to experiment present in pre-school level formulas and unusual languages.

5. We shall not subjecting children to stress?

In fact, the problem of "subject to a stress" does not arise in bilingual kindergartens in which the teacher usually uses the "other language" and occasionally reading a story to children. The stress comes into play when the official school program requires achieving certain results in limited time or when the child is frightened at being treated severely or because their parents expect results beyond his reach.

6. The early language learning can be detrimental to the sense of identity?

learning two languages and learning to think in two languages, children live and experience the variety, so they are no longer prisoners of monolithic identity. The early learning of languages creates people who have roots like everyone else, but they know that their roots are not alone and that there are many for how many people there.

In the next post, I'll add the scientific reasons that NLP gives us.

WHY 'THE PORTFOLIO

The term Portfolio appeared rather recently in the field of language education and, in the Italian, only in 1998 with the CM 304

Community Media. The European Language Portfolio ©
The main purpose of the European Language Portfolio © is to promote intercultural competence and multilingual European citizens, helping and guiding
youths and adults to develop those abilities, skills and attitudes that are necessary for the formation of ' future European citizen.
Although many social policies of our own small towns do not already have noticed this is the European Directorate.

How is the Portfolio The Portfolio consists of three distinct sections: 1
• The language passport, which is a short section that provides initial

, reflecting the performance achieved in the process of language learning
.

WHAT IS? The portfolio helps students to be especially aware and self-critical of their improvements in the language, and especially to identify the assets and skills to better succeed.
I am a fierce supporter of the portfolio in children, because it's helping them discover their own ways of learning, a method of forming a self in language learning but also general.
addition, the Portfolio is a great assessment tool for teachers, schools and other institutions autandole to set targets for language learning once known motivations of the learner, having learned
and being able to evaluate past experience. The Portfolio
, finally, helps businesses, services and employers to have a fairly detailed knowledge of COMPETENCE language of the future staff to plan activities and internal / external or upgrade

My Cat Ate Ribbon Should I Worry

Antidepressant ineffective and potentially harmful

According to German researchers, headed by Beate Wieseler and Thomas Kaiser, data published so far tend to overestimate benefits and underestimate the potential dangers of the drug.
The practice of publishing only positive results of studies in addition to being scientifically incorrect does not allow doctors and patients a choice.

What's The Difference Between Pakis And Bengalis

BLENDED

* Tipi di intelligenza implicati nell’apprendimento di una lingua:

o linguistica (abilità di usare la lingua per esprimere emozioni e pensieri e capire gli altri);

o logico-matematica (riflessione formale “grammaticale”, difficoltà a lanciarsi nella comunicazione);

o spaziale (ricostruire mentally or change the layout of objects, figurative language, dictionaries shown);

or music (save language songs);

or personal intelligences (intrapersonal = activities that express their feelings, interpersonal = activity that correlate with others, eg. dialogues and scenes).

* References are in: Balboni, 2002, 2008; Infante, 2005; McKenzie, 2006; Torresan, 2008.
"* Several studies on the benefits of technology for teaching and learning a foreign language:

or an ideal medium for collaborative learning through social Both interaction with a tutor and with peers and useful to Encourage students to construct knowledge Their Own (Hampel and Hauck, 2004, p. 68);

or help the learner to demonstrate his ability to negotiate and define its path.

* Computer Mediated Communication (CMC):

or motivates learners to establish meaningful communication in the target language to achieve real objectives;

or reduces anxiety, strengthens the autonomy of the learner and promotes collaborative learning. "It must be said that the
blended but in early childhood must be at least some functional or tares, especially in childhood because the learner has not acquired a certain mode of learning.
* Blended learning (or blended language learning) seems to be more suitable for language learning. *

blended well balanced approach could reduce the gap between students of LS and L2 students.

* Strengthen the skills of listening and speaking.

* Helping the learner to feel more relaxed, so it can decide when and how to contribute.

Blended Learning lowering the "affective filter" which leads to a better disposition towards activities that require a total absence of risk and behavior anxiety in the face of possible errors. "

MOTHER TONGUE TEACHER? A special

is that after the weekend seminar CLIL, the issue was resolved for me! obvious that native speakers are always better than teacher of L1 which follows as a second language to study. Some School Administrator, municipal employees and directors of non-professionals in the field, they differ (in some cases they are right but it depends on the fact that the teacher is language).
The reasons cited are: The teacher will not be able to literally translate the concepts from L1 to L2, or that the two talking and translating some bad words and structures, will lead to the wrong student, or that a teacher who speaks only in the L2 lesson will not teach you anything (because I do not understand) for the learner especially if children.
And here comes the answer according to some texts cited at the end of this post: the best teacher and bilingual in advance, but not always, or in all situations. Sometimes
for children (not really 100% bilingual) may be exposed to a perfect pronunciation of native speakers, but that should not translate concepts into context, unless the activity has a lens different from the language understanding of the word in itself. (Cases of boost to the pronunciation)
course must be empathetic, especially with children and do no more than translate the words and for all, avoiding the cognitive effort that will allow the storage, and last but not least, a native English teacher (especially in children under 8 years old, adults with a level B2 or higher, within CLIL, or within specialized courses) has a cultural heritage that the language that the L2 teacher can not learn as good in 6 years of college, or several trips abroad.
The teacher who teaches a rather native L1 L2 is optimal (if it is not bilingual) when it comes to adults over 50 beginner with the language being studied. This
my thinking is not a sacrosanct principle, but in principle, a principle that has proved efficient in general, as evidenced by the same university language courses in Italy and in the main universities of Linguistics deal.
