Electron microscopy and its applications

The science of sample preparation and examination with an electron microscope. As the electron microscope was developed it was found that many of the techniques familiar to light microscopy could not be used because of the peculiar properties of the electron beam. It is necessary that the sample and its support is extremely thin.

As a tool for observing the results of a physical experiment, the electron microscope is of value in any field of research involving in some way the micro structure of solids. The electron microscope has already been applied to a wide variety of problems.

Typical applications include electron microscopy, the correlation between the shape and size of a pigment particle with its opacity and other properties when used in a paint.

metallurgy, chemistry, biology and medicine are the main areas in which the electron microscope has already been applied. The reason for its wide application arises from a fundamental capability of the instrument, namely its ability to present information visible as the size, shape and geometrical arrangement of the structural elements of a solid material.
